Buoyancy 2

Object: Buoyancy - Does the ocean rise, fall or stay the same when a sailboat looses its lead keel?

Material: tall drinking glass

lead fishing weight

cork

paper clip

1. Fill glass with water to level that will float the cork with the lead attached.

2. Attach lead to cork using paper clip bent to insert into cork and through hole in weight

3. Float cork and lead

4. Mark water level on glass

5. Ask question of children as to what will happen to the water level when the lead is disconnected from cork and allowed to rest on the bottom of the glass with just the cork floating

6. Disconnect lead and observe the results

7. Follow up questions:

(A) What volume of water does the lead weight displace when attached to the cork?

2. What volume of water does the lead weight displace when sitting in the bottom of the glass?
3. Can Archimedes’ principle help you solve this problem?
