Lesson Plan 27

A Sailing Vessel

Our second session of sailing included a visit to Columbus St. Terminal and a look at Neal's boat as well as a visit to Horizon boat yard in Meggett. We were introduced to parts of the boat, design options, construction types, as well as nautical terms and conditions encountered.

For my second graders I will tie this class lesson into our November Social Studies unit on America Long Ago (the Indians, Pilgrims, and the Mayflower).

First we will read aloud The First Thanksgiving by Linda Hayward and discuss what the voyage must have been like for these people. Next we will study the diagram of the Godspeed (one of the Pilgrims' ships) from their Social Studies book.

In group sizes of two or three I will have students draw the Godspeed (from their Social Studies text) on poster size paper. Other groups of two or three will be doing research on the computer, encyclopedia, or books selected from the library in our class to find facts about the sailing vessels of the 1600s.

Together we will label the bow, stern, centerboard, rudder, port, starboard, tiller, mast, sails, hold, crew's quarters, and captain's quarters for display in our room.

Finally the research groups will report interesting facts about the size and sailing conditions aboard a sailing vessel in the 1600s. We will make a chart of these facts for display in our class.
