Lesson Plan 21

SUBJECT: Science

GRADE LEVEL: 2nd grade

TITLE: Nutrition for An Extended Voyage

For my follow-up lesson on Nutrition for my second graders I did a lesson involving the Food Pyramid. We discussed the necessary daily requirements of the four food groups, noting that more fruits and vegetables and grains are needed than milk and meats. This is the reason we now use a pyramid shape. I gave them a coloring sheet of the Pyramid to help them remember where these groups go on the shape. For an at home assignment each child (21 students) was to plan a day's food choices for 3 meals being sure that 4 servings of fruit-vegetables 4 servings of grains 3 servings from milk group and 2 servings from meat group were included. In class the following day we shared our menus and compiled them into a booklet for an extended 21 day menu guide that fit our food pyramid requirements and that could be helpful in planning food for an extended voyage.
