GRADE LEVEL: 2nd grade
TITLE: Friction
Our sailing class met at the Columbus Street Terminal at Neal's boat under the Cooper River Bridge in work clothes and with sanders and extension cords. It was cold!!! We worked on sanding the hull in preparation for painting.
For my second graders I did an activity on friction. On What Surface Do Things Move Easier? We pulled a book across 4 different surfaces with rubber bands. The four surfaces were l) sandpaper,2) wax paper, 3) a desk top, and 4) stones. Then we measured in centimeters how far the rubber bands stretched during the pulling. We found that the rubber bands stretched about 7 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm, and 6 cm respectively. Then students showed their results on a bar graph. Our conclusion was that the smoother the surface the easier objects move across it. Therefore the sanding or smoothing of the surface of the hull of the boat will make it move with less friction through the water.
